Unit 9  |  New Technology and Innovative Sustainability Approaches 206 While technological developments in renewable energy are important drivers of job creation, not all green jobs need to revolve around advanced technology. There is already a high demand for workers who are knowledgeable and skilled in green practices within traditional job categories. Making traditional jobs more green is sometimes referred to as “green- ing jobs.” For example, the growing movement toward green building has created growing markets for architects, engi- neers, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians who are skilled in designing and building more sustainable structures. The same can be said about manufacturing, where the move- ment toward lean manufacturing , production that minimizes resource inputs and waste outputs, requires engineers and managers who are versed in sustainable design. In this sense, greening existing jobs is just as important as creating new green jobs. Electricians with knowledge of green practices are in demand. LEAN MANUFACTURING A set of manufacturing practices that prioritize effi- ciency and the minimization of waste.
