Unit 9 | New Technology and Innovative Sustainability Approaches 204 Green buildings need ongoing operations and management that continues after construction is completed. The decisions that building managers and occupants make about upgrades, equipment replacement, cleaning materials, and energy use have an equal or greater impact on sustainability than initial construction. A good example of prioritizing this approach can be seen in the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) in Vancouver. This LEED Platinum certified building opened in 2011. It was designed so that build- ing modules could be easily removed and reconstructed as advancements in technology and design become available. The designers of CIRS see it as a living laboratory of best prac- tices in sustainable design. SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS A driving force behind the creation of green jobs and green innovation is the work of social entrepreneurs — individuals, companies, and organizations that promote community development, equality, and environmental health through economic activity. Many social entrepreneurs have been active in the developing world, creating sustainable solutions to poverty and environmental degradation. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS Individuals, companies, or organizations that promote social or environmental health through economic activity.
