Unit 9  |  New Technology and Innovative Sustainability Approaches 193 9.4  Sustainable Transportation Transportation is an area with tremendous potential for sus- tainability gains through innovation. At present, transportation accounts for about one quarter of the world’s energy demand and CO 2 emissions. The sustainability of transportation varies widely within and between countries, depending on population density, the price of fuel, and public transportation networks. Western Europe and Japan have a lower transportation foot- print than in North America. Using successful transportation initiatives as models, other countries could make significant progress by including public transit, biking routes, and safe walkways in urban transportation plans.
