A fundamental change in how humanity obtains and uses energy is crucial in order to meet sustainability goals. Energy supply is a major concern. While markets have fluctuated wildly in recent years, rising populations and growing economies will continue to increase demand and raise fossil fuel prices. According to the United Nations, the world population is expected to rise to at least nine billion by 2050. During the same time period, economic output is expected to increase three-fold, a combination likely to lead to a huge and growing demand for energy supplies.
