Using the three pillars together provides the structure needed to make sustainable choices. The environment includes the Earth and all its biophysical components: oceans, atmosphere, soil, mountains, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, forests, lakes, rivers, and biogeochemical cycles , such as water, carbon, and nitrogen.
