St. Helena offers venues in all shapes and sizes along with a veritable smorgasbord of amenities. regional facts and figures Napa County is one of the nine Bay Area counties, oriented originally towards the regional transportation, communication, and banking hub of the city of San Francisco. St. Helena is located just 65 miles north of San Francisco and within easy driving distance of three international airports: San Francisco, Sacramento, and Oakland. There are two regional airports serving Napa County: one in south county and one in the upvalley town of Angwin. The area was settled in 1834 as part of General Vallejo’s land grant. The city was incorporated in 1876. From its inception, the city served as an agricultural center. Now it ranks as the center of our worldclass wine business and functions as the banking and investment center for that $11 billion industry. Although more than 40% of the workers employed in Napa County work in the wine industry, many of our workers live outside the county and commute to work. The weather is simply the best in the world….it is the reason why many of us live here. Pleasant all year round though contrary to popular belief we do have seasons. our Napa County is considered the most rural of all the Bay Area counties. This is partly due to the extensive land area consumed by lakes, rivers, forests, and craggy mountains and partly by human design. Napa County stepped out in front of the rest of the United States in the 1960’s by adopting the first agricultural land protection policy. Known to locals as the Ag Preserve, the policy was then and is to this day, a groundbreaking land use policy that protects the agricultural character and quality of this unique valley by asserting that agriculture and open space is the “best use” for this extraordinarily fertile land. b a c k t o t a b l e o f c o n t e n t s n e w s l e t t e r s “Ken was something of a visionary. I told him I’ve got a plan, and he said that we have the land.” year-round, but during the winter we get Merlins and sometimes even a Prairie falcon. I also lead tours at Skaggs Island, which gets everything in the book. But Lynch is not far off from Skaggs in terms of what’s out there. Between Lynch and Skaggs Island, those are the two hot spots in the North Bay Area. Could you talk about why you wanted to dedicate the season to Ken Poerner? I knew he was ill, but I didn’t know how ill. I saw posts about him leaving property and equipment to the docents and trail stewards. Ken was an inspirational leader. Very charismatic, very hands-on. Whenever I would meet him, he was very cognizant of what birds of prey were passing through and where they could be seen. Ken was something of a visionary. I told him I’ve got a plan and a vision, and he said that we have the land. The season starts late August and runs through March, but the peak is mid-September through February. Scheduled upcoming dates are Nov 28th, December 18th, and January 15th. The hiking fee is $10.00. Registrations can be made at solanolandtrust.org/events/birds-of-prey. Samuel James Adams Larry Broderick Larry Broderick Rough-legged hawk Tom Reynolds Large group at Birds of Prey Walk 3 Where the raptors roam Continued from P1 They held activities at several properties, but Lynch Canyon consistently produced the most numbers and the most species. “We’ve had over one hundred events in fifteen years,” Larry says. “There’s often forty people in a group, but sometimes there are ninety. So since we started it’s possible that we’ve opened the door to four or five thousand people. And lots of them come back.” Larry took some time to talk with us and explain what brings birds and birders back to this singular space. But the best way to see the birds is at Lynch, and the best way to know what you’re seeing is to join one of Larry’s upcoming Birds of Prey hikes! What makes Lynch Canyon a good habitat for raptors? The main thing with Lynch Canyon is it’s a hotbed of prey for predators. There are no pesticides, no real development, no threat of shooting. So all the things that our prey species normally endure in civilized landscapes—cars, poisons, electrocution, etc.—Lynch Canyon is safe from all that. There’s a healthy population of ground squirrels, voles, moles, and all the little furry things that crawl around. You look at the California mammal guide, there’s a lot of them in there. So there’s a healthy, reliable, sustainable prey base in a land that’s kept pristine, so to speak. I imagine Lynch Canyon’s proximity to other open lands play a part… It’s somewhat of a wildlife corridor: Suisun Marsh to the south; American Canyon to the north; Newell to the west. There are lots of greenbelts involved. The riparian corridors are normally managed to keep out the cattle and the overall management helps protect special ecosystems. There are river otters from the Suisun Marsh who come up to Lynch. But the prey that the birds are capitalizing on are pretty much rooted in the Lynch Canyon area. What makes Lynch Canyon a good location for viewing? The sheer fact that there’s hills and updrafts from the Napa River, Skaggs Island, and the whole Highway 37 corridor. When the wind hits Lynch Canyon, the updrafts and thermals provide lift for the birds. There’s also not a lot of danger posed by the humans who use Lynch Canyon. Raptors love open grasslands, and that’s largely what Lynch Canyon is made up of.The grasslands provide endless prey base that the raptors thrive on. What species can people expect to see in the peak season for overwintering hawks? You’ve got your residents. And you’ve got winter migrants. During the summer and spring, we have six to eight species who are constant. One time we had eighteen species in the winter. We had amazing results from the Rough-legged hawk, an overwintering bird from the Arctic, Alaska, and northern Canada. One time we had six at Lynch. We’re lucky if we see one or two across the Bay Area. Ferruginous hawk is another overwintering guest, another Buteo. And then we get Merlins from Alaska and Canada. And if we hit it right, we get the migration of Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks, two accipiters. For falcons, we get American Kestrels and Peregrines Ken Poerner Merlin eating a smaller bird Ken Poerner Anne DeLozier 2 Fall 2021. Vol. 28 #2 Continued on page 2 Land connects us all – protecting it today, saving it for tomorrow Where the raptors roam Larry Broderick dedicates the 2021/2022 Birds of Prey ike se son to Ken Poerner “This whole thing started with Ken Poerner in 2001,” says Larry Broderick, who leads Birds of Prey hikes throughout the North Bay with his organization West County HawkWatch. “Ken’s interpretation of what I wanted to do led us down the path to where we’re at.” 2001 was when Larry met Ken at the San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival and discussed leading birding activities near Travis Air Force Base. Ken mentioned the properties of the Solano Land Trust and introduced Larry to Teri Engbring, a Volunteer Coordinator for the land trust. They worked together and began the program in 2007. Before that there weren’t any raptor-themed birds of prey tours in the North Bay. Rough-legged hawk Tom Muehleisen S a n SF Phil

3 12 F r a n c i s c o R e f i n e r y News S p r i n g 2 0 2 1 For the Phillips 66 San Francisco Refinery in Rodeo, 125 never looked so good. The oldest refinery in operation on the U.S. West Coast is marking the milestone anniversary with a nod to its past and a commitment to a lower-carbon future with Rodeo Renewed, an ambitious project to transform the refinery into one of the world’s largest renewable fuels plants. “We take great pride in celebrating 125 years in Contra Costa County; our roots here run deep,” Phillips 66 San Francisco Refinery General Manager Rich Harbison said. “We look forward to continuing to make good on our vision of providing energy and improving lives and playing a leading role in California’s energy future.” The refinery kicked off a year-long celebration by raising a commemorative flag outside its administration building. Refinery leadership was presented with a plaque by the Bay Front Chamber of Commerce and the refinery’s Community Advisory Panel, which includes residents and representatives from local businesses and agencies. First barrel processed in February 1896 The San Francisco Refinery traces its beginnings to the late 19th century and the Union Oil Company, a thennascent enterprise that settled on an 18-acre site in present-day Rodeo to build a refinery, just as California’s crude oil production boomed. The refinery, originally named Oleum, processed its first barrel of crude on Feb. 24, 1896, according to at least one newspaper report. It was geared to make asphalt but also well equipped to produce other in-demand products at the time, including kerosene and fuel oil. Its initial crude throughput capacity was between 600 and 1,200 barrels per day. The rise of the internal combustion engine in the automobile changed the demand landscape, and the refinery grew and evolved into a key supplier of transportation fuels and lubricants. It continues to play a major role in helping California meet its fuel demand. Today’s 120,000-BPD San Francisco Refinery consists of two facilities located 200 miles apart. The Santa Maria plant in Arroyo Grande processes crude oil into semi-refined products and ships them via pipeline to the Rodeo plant for upgrading. Santa Maria celebrates its 66th anniversary later this year. Rodeo also operates a carbon plant near the refinery, while Santa Maria produces petroleum coke and sulfur. Rodeo Renewed slated for startup in 2024 The next step in the San Francisco Refinery’s evolution is its foray into renewable fuels. Later this year, Rodeo plans to begin production of up to 9,000 BPD of renewable diesel. Rodeo Renewed, the much-larger project currently in the permitting stages, will aim to pivot the refinery completely away from crude oil processing and turn it into a renewable fuels plant. Pending receipt of county authorizations, work on the proposed complex is slated to be completed for startup in early 2024. The converted complex is expected to produce 800 million gallons per year — or more than 50,000 BPD — of renewable diesel, renewable naphtha and sustainable aviation fuel. It will do so from feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, greases and soybean oils and in support of growing demand for these fuels and California’s environmental goals. The conversion is expected to cut the plant’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, contributing to cleaner air in the Bay Area. The refinery also is pursuing additional projects such as solar to power its processes. “As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we’re excited about the transformation we’re about to embark on,” Harbison said. “We also want to continue to be a model for safe, reliable and environmentally responsible operations — and a trusted partner in our community. “As we honor the legacy of our predecessors, we want to set the facility on a path to make the next 125 years the best ones yet.” FR 125th Anniversary Kick-0ff illips 66 celebrates 125 years in Bay Area with nod to past, commitment to future By Bernardo Fallas Rich Harbison Delivering Remarks Phillips 66 Corporate Communications 13 S p r i n g 2 0 2 1 S a n F r a n c i s c o R e f i n e r y News Safe Cracker, 125th Anniversary A safe from the 19th century contained payroll records recovered from 1896 and 1898 as well as refinery reports.
